Subject 1: “Reflection on My 38-Year Reliability Practices”

To make reliability happen, there are two types of practices from the presenter’s 38-year experience in the automotive(30+), medical equipment (6+), and consulting industries (2+). At the personal level, four practices have been beneficial to help solve problems and grow personal capability over time. They are discussed with presenter’s own real world cases.
These four practices are 1) make something appear, 2) make something disappear, 3) take two things and switch places,and 4) change one thing into something else. At the organizational level, several practices that help establish a useful and workable reliability process are discussed. These practices start with minimum effort, but will return maximum benefits.

Subject 2: “Warranty Prediction and Early Detection Methods”

A warranty data format/structure typically known as the “Nevada Table” used by many industries is explained. Various methods are discussed for three major topics in warranty data analysis. The first topic is the prediction of number of warranty returned parts in the next 6-month or 1-year from today. This helps companies budget production and service parts for inventory control and warranty cost estimation. The second topic is the evaluation of the current warranty policy for potentially extending it from, say, 3 years to 7 years for extended warranty. This helps companies to judge if they could offer extended warranty to be more competitive in the industry or opportunities they still need to improve on and by how much. The third topic is the application of Z-MR chart to provide early alert of warranty issues when they just popped with limited numbers in the field. This can help early detection of major issues and initiate countermeasures earlier.

Currently a Senior Principal Consultant for a Fortune 500 company and a former Purdue/Wayne State professor, he is a recognized expert in advanced engineering statistics and an ASQ award winner.
